The year is starting to draw near to a close and with the movie business grossing over $7,000,000,000 is the US alone this year there have been some blockbusters in the cinema.

From 80s remakes and action films, to comic book sequels and family movies, hundreds of movies have reached our screens this year.  So let’s have a look at a few of the biggest blockbuster movies released in 2016:

Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice

Released in March and grossing more than $800 million worldwide from a budget less than one-third of that amount, Batman vs Superman Dawn of Justice proved to be a hit.  The sequel to the 2013 Man of Steel, the story is based around the world’s struggle to accept Superman as their true hero.  Some people consider him nothing more than a vigilante and even warn the world of how dangerous he really is.

Criminal mastermind Lex Luthor manipulates Batman into a pre-emptive battle with Superman, whom Luthor is obsessed with defeating.  The film stars Henry Cavill as Superman and Ben Affleck as Gotham’s favourite knight.  Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg all feature.

X-Men: Apocalypse

The 9th film in the X-Men series, X-Men: Apocalypse grossed more than $500 million from its $178 million budget, released back in May.  The original X-Men film was released in 2000 and has been a hugely popular and successful franchise ever since.

Apocalypse stars Michael Fassbender as Magneto and James McAvoy as Charles Xavier trying to prevent the ancient mutant En Sabah Nur plans to wipe out modern civilisation and take over the world.

Deadpool

Comic fans had been waiting a long time to see Deadpool on their screens and their wish came true in February earlier this year.  The film proved a massive success, grossing more than $750 million off of its relatively small budget of $58 million compared to some of the comic films released recently.

Ryan Reynolds plays Wade Wilson, a former Special Forces operative who now works as a mercenary. His world comes crashing down when evil scientist Ajax tortures, disfigures and transforms him into Deadpool. Deadpool has accelerated healing powers and a twisted sense of humour. The film follows him using his new skills to hunt down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Ghostbusters

Not the most-successful film this year but this year’s remake of the 1984 classic, Ghostbusters raked in $229 million after a $145 million budget.  The 2016 version stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones as the eponymous team. Staying true to the original story but with a modern day spin, the team get together to save New York City from ghosts. The film features cameos from original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver.

Captain America: Civil War

The highest-grossing film of 2016, Captain America: Civil War has raked in more than $1.1 billion – more than four times its budget.  With the stars of the MCU, including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johannsson and Chris Hemsworth reprising their roles, this year’s release quickly became the summer hit straight out of the gate. Captain America: Civil War follows the story of the gradual tension growing within the Avengers and the inevitable fallout.

The film introduces Black Panther, the new Spiderman and brings Ant-Man in with the Avengers for the first time.
